BIOGRAPHY: At about 2:00 am On 22 October 1522 the town of Villa Franca, just a few miles from Grotas Fundas, was destroyed as Sao Miguel was rocked by the most severe earthquakes since the island's first settlement. Gaspar Frutuoso recorded that it not only destroyed Villa Franca, burying its inhabitants in their homes as they slept. The land was broken apart in many other parts of the island as well. Examples were Ponta Garca, which was only from Villa Franca; Grotas Fundas was part of Ponta Garca. In Grotas Fundas "a large movement of earth carried away houses and cattle and all that were in front died and several were inhabitants among whom was one Joao Afonso [I believe this refers to Capitao Joao Afonso de Pimentel], who was very rich and of a condition that none else had such means' nevertheless, the force of the moving earth was against him." Many saw two women carried into the ocean. The only problem with associating Joao Afonso o velho to the earthquake of 1522 is that Capitao Joao Afonso de Pimentel supposedly made his will on 17 MAR 1527, five years after the earthquake [Familias].
